Angin for SATB voices a capella

Angin (The Wind) was a setting based on a poem written by Bagus Syafrieza Paradhika, dedicated to Okie Hosea (July 8th, 1981-July 30th, 2020). The music implies a lot of word painting technique such as ‘rainbow’, ‘ stop’, and others. (Jakarta, April 24th, 2020)

    Mendesau berkesah

    berhembus lirih

    Menyampaikan pesan

    Kesan malam merindukan nurani

    Memimpikan fajar berpelangi

    Bertahtakan mentari

    Berhasrat menuju cakrawala meninggi

    Membawa perih dambaan hati

    Bertiup lirih semilir gemerisik

    Berpilin-pilin mensunyi sesekali berhenti…

    Membawa pergi rahasia hati.

    Akankah gejolak batin pergi berakhir?

    Senyap bertenang angin malam

    Sampaikan salamku padanya

    Buah hati kenangan pesona

    Yang dulu ada kini tiada…

    Sang penguasa hidup dan semesta

    padaNya lah segala asa.

Perjalanan Angan for SATB div. voices a capella

Recorded by 78 Youth Choir Jakarta
    Jessica Fedora Amadea, conductor

Perjalanan Angan (Journey of Thoughts) was inspired by the busy traffic in Jakarta. Cherly described the beginning as someone is walking through a crowded situation where people are chatting, the cars are honking, a bakso (meatball) seller is passing by and the ambulance’s siren is heard, when suddenly the thoughts of that person slowly enters one’s own imagination built by the surroundings. With a lot of ideas and imagination, one is dancing in one’s own head. (Jakarta, May 27th, 2019)

    Saat gelisah menyapa

    Bertabur duka nestapa

    Ku hanya bisa memejamkan mata,

    Mengucap sebuah doa

    Saat ku disapa sepi

    Tanpa hadirmu di sini

    Sejenak berdiam dalam gelita,

    Mendamba senyumanmu.

Ijinkanku sampaikan rinduku lewat angin malam untukmu.

    Doaku kau s’lalu bahagia.

    Badai kan berlalu,

    Kita ‘kan bersatu,

    Tak lagi terpisah jarak.

    Saat kita mencinta…

    English translation:

When the restless and sorrow greets me

All I can do is close my eyes,

    Say my prayer

When the loneliness of your absence greets me

I stayed in the dark for a moment,

    longing for your smile.

Allow me to express my yearning

through the night wind, for you.

I wish you an eternal bliss.

The storm will pass, we will be united,

No longer separated by the distance.

    When we are loving…

Star Light, Star Bright for SSA voices a capella

Recorded by SD Gloria 3 Children Choir
    Ike Sinandang, conductor

Star Light, Star Bright’s main idea is to imitate the twinkling stars, which represented by the rhythm pattern at the beginning of the song. As it was initially written for primary students, the composer tried to make it as simple as possible by having repetitive patterns, only with different keys and tempo. (Jakarta, April 13th, 2018)

Cahaya Purnama for SATB div. voices a capella

Recorded by Paramabira and Quaver Vocal Ensemble
    Rainier Revireino, conductor

Cahaya Purnama (Moonlight) was inspired by the 15th governor of Jakarta, Basuki Tjahaja Purnama, as at the moment this piece was written, has made a lot of changes in Jakarta, where Cherly lives. The first idea of the music was the first three notes, followed by the melody sung by the sopranos. The altos take over the melody, and slowly build up to the Slow Dance part, where everyone is the melody. The Starry Night part is where the bass take the lead and other voices replicates the twinkling stars. Afterwards, the tenors take the lead and finally, the song is concluded with the same harmony with the beginning. (Jakarta, 27 June 2017)

    Gelap malam t’lah menyapa

Sang purnama merajut asa, memadu kasih, menggugah jiwa

    Sang purnama ciptakan asa

    Cahaya purnama,

    Cahayanya penuh cinta

    menyalakan pengarapanku.

    English translation:

The darkness of night has come

    Crowned by the moonlight

Erasing the soul’s longing of light

The moon shines and amazes the people

Not willing to have it replaced by the sun

And the stars are dancing, adoring the bright shining moon

The moon has entered the soul with love

The stars twinkle in the sky

Calling out their praises for the moon

The moon gives hope, loving, awakens the soul

    The moon creates hope

    The moonlight,

The light is full of love

    Light up my hopes.
